47-Hour Firearms Training Course

The NYS 47-Hour Firearms Training Course provides the required classroom and live-fire instruction for individuals seeking to become licensed armed security guards in New York State.

  • The New York State (NYS) 47-hour firearms training course is a course required to become an armed security guard. The course includes classroom instruction and range training.

    Topics Covered

    • Gun safety: How to hold, store, and transport a firearm safely

    • Shooting fundamentals: How to grip, line up sights, and control the trigger

    • Tactical shooting: How to use a firearm safely and effectively in real-world situations

    • Firearm care and cleaning: How to keep a firearm in good working order

    • Use of force: Legal guidelines for using force, including deadly physical force

    • Weapon handling: How to handle different types of firearms, including handguns, shotguns, and rifles

    Course Requirements

    • Valid NYS Pistol Permit

    • Valid NYS security guard registration card

    • Duty-type weapon, holster, and magazines if carrying a semi-auto

    Course Completion

    • Pass a written examination on Article 35 of the NYS Penal Law

    • Qualify with a handgun on the firing range

8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards

This 8-hour course is the first step to becoming a licensed NYS security guard, covering duties, legal responsibilities, and professional conduct. Completion requires passing a brief exam.

  • This is an 8-hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.

    • An introductory course that must be completed before applying for a security guard registration card

    • Includes an exam that consists of multiple-choice and true or false questions

    • Upon passing, a certificate of completion is issued

16-Hour On-the-Job Training for Security Guards

This 16-hour course trains new security guards in legal duties, emergency response, and professional conduct to perform their role safely and effectively.

  • This required 16-hour On-the-Job Training course must be completed within the first 90 days of employment as a security guard. It provides new guards with the core knowledge and practical skills needed to perform their duties safely, professionally, and in compliance with New York State regulations. Students receive in-depth instruction on legal responsibilities, emergency response, communication, and essential day-to-day security functions. A written exam is required to successfully complete the course.

    Course topics include:

    • Role and responsibilities of the security guard

    • Legal powers and limitations

    • Emergency response procedures

    • Communication skills and public relations

    • Access control and perimeter security

    • Patrolling techniques and surveillance

    • Ethics and professional conduct

    • Incident reporting and documentation

    • Introduction to the Incident Command System and terrorism awareness

8-Hour Annual
Armed In-Service Security Guard Course

Keep your armed security certification current with this 8-hour New York–mandated in-service course, featuring use-of-force instruction, range training, and a written exam.

  • The 8-hour Annual Armed In-Service Security Guard Training course is a yearly training requirement for armed security guards in New York. The course includes classroom instruction and range training.

    What’s Included: 

    • Classroom instruction: 3 hours on use of force and deadly physical force

    • Range training: 5 hours of practical range training and qualification with a handgun

    • Written examination: Students must pass a written examination on use of force and deadly physical force

8-Hour Annual In-Service Course

The 8-Hour Annual In-Service Course updates security guards on duties and best practices. Completion is required yearly for license renewal and must be on file with the Department of Licensing.

  • This 8-hour course is developed by the security guard training school and must be completed to maintain and renew a security guard registration card. The course is structured to provide the student with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. The eight-hour annual in-service course is comprised of 8 hours of instruction that may include 2 hours of security related elective topics. A security guard must complete two annual in-service courses in their two-year registration period.

    • Must be completed annually within 12 months of completing the 16-hour On-the-Job Training Course

    • Mandatory for security license renewal

    • Must be completed and on file with the Department of Licensing office before submitting a renewal application
